Seeds from Pittosporum tenuifolium nigricans, kohukohu, or Black Matipo. It is sometimes grown under the cultivar name Nigricans, so called because of its black stems. Used in many floral arrangements. The blossoms are a very dark reddish purple, and are honey scented only at night. This evergreen tree grows to 30 feet in zones 9 to 10. In horticulture it is valued for its ruby to burgundy foliage and for its tolerance of some difficult growing conditions, including dry soils and shade.
