Pygmy date palm or Phoenix roebelenii grow slowly reaching heights of 8 to 10 feet. The stem is covered with old leaf bases and is topped with a dense head of bright green pinnate leaves that grow to about 4 ft in length. Cream colored flowers are on short, 1 ft inflorescence and are followed by small black dates on the female plants. Although this palm is single stemmed most of the time you see it grouped in 3 or 5 per planting. When grouped like this, the stems tend to curve away from the center of the clump creating an especially attractive grouping especially as at a garden entrance.
