Seeds from Musa monticola This diminutive mountain banana is only known to grow above elevations of 1000 m in the mountainous regions of northern Sabah, Borneo. The slender, dark mottled pseudostems are only 3 to 7 ft. tall. The upright inflorescence produces glossy purplish-brown bracts followed by miniature bananas held in a very dense bunch not much bigger than a very large pineapple. The small ripe fruits, although seedy, are very sweet. A rare and localized species that should be most suitable for the cooler tropics and warm temperate areas with protection from frost. Zones 9 to 11.
