Seeds from Iris bloudowii. Iris bloudowii preferred habitats are alpine meadows and fields. It is native to Asia. Plant gets from 20 to 30 cm tall. The flowers consist of 3 sepals and 3 petals. Iris bloudowii has very pretty dark yellow blossoms with violet veins, 5 cm in diameter, from early Spring to late Autumn. The scape grows to about 4 inches tall and bears two terminal blossoms. The leaves are grayish green, sword shaped, slightly curved, and predominantly striped. The plant spreads by means of its modified stems, rhizomes, which are located below the soil surface. Hardiness zones 4 to9. Requires a semi shaded site and moist and well drained soil during the vegetative period. Very well suited to the rock garden, and for group planting. First, you can scarify the seeds for faster germination, but don’t knick the embryo. Soak the seeds in slightly hot water for 24 to 48 hours, followed by 3 months cold stratification before sowing a quarter inch deep. Keep damp soil, not soaking wet. Seed coats may be so hard that they are waterproof. They need to be scratched or broken using a knife or sandpaper, in order to germinate. Chip the seeds with a sharp knife or make a few swipes with a sharp edged file or use sandpaper to allow for moisture to be more readily absorbed. Germination usually takes several months and it can be more, depending on the degree of unbroken dormancy and the breakdown of germination inhibitors, so don’t give up.
