Seeds from Hyophorbe verschaffeltii. Spindle shaped trunk thin at top and bottom with a prominent bulge in the middle. Unique crown shaft that bulges at its base. Pinnate leaves that somewhat arch and also twist on their axis a bit. The latter fact can be used to tell them from the Bottle Palm. Also, the petiole leafstalk is yellow, whereas the Bottle palm petiole will have shades of red. It can reach 14-16 feet. A unique, different and popular palm that should be part of any palm collection, providing you don’t get cold. Its fusiform trunk, silver unique crown shaft, and somewhat short leaves make it a very nice landscape palm. More cold hardy than the Bottle Palm. Zones 9b-11. Picture Courtesy of Randy Ableman
