Eutrochium maculatum Gateway is native to damp meadows, thickets and coastal areas in eastern North America and is commonly called Joe Pye weed. Gateway is a popular cultivar that is more compact than the subspecies, typically growing shorter to 4 or 5 feet tall and bushier with tighter and thicker inflorescences. It is an erect, clump forming perennial that features serrated dark green leaves up to 8 inches long and typically in whorls of 3 to 4 on sturdy, wine red stems. Tiny, dusky rose pink flowers in huge 12 to 18 inches in diameter bloom in mid summer to early Fall. The flowers attract butterflies. USDA Hardiness Zones 4 to 8.
