Seeds of this bulb plant Calochortus tolmiei. A perennial herb producing a slender stem, branched or unbranched, to 16 inches in maximum height. There is a basal leaf up to 16 inches long which does not wither at flowering, and generally a smaller leaf farther up the stem. The blossom is a solitary bloom or a cluster of bell-shaped flowers. Each has white to pale pink or purple petals, each up to 1 inch long, and three narrower sepals beneath. The petals are usually very hairy on their inner surfaces, and may be fringed with long hairs as well. It can be white, lavender, purple, or bi-colored. Requires a deep very well-drained fertile sandy soil in a sunny position and must be kept dry over winter. Calochortus tolmiei is a North American species of flowering plant in the lily family known by the common names Tolmie star-tulip and pussy ears. It is native to the west coast of the United States. Seed – sow as soon as ripe or early spring in a cold frame in a very sharply draining medium. Stratification may be helpful. Germination usually takes place within 1 – 6 months at 60f. Blossoms April through July in zones 6-9.
