Seeds of this bulb plant Calochortus superbus or mariposa lily. A perennial herb producing a slender stem, branched or unbranched, to 16 inches in maximum height. There is a basal leaf up to 16 inches long which does not wither at flowering, and generally a smaller leaf farther up the stem. The blossom is a solitary bloom or a cluster of bell-shaped flowers. Each generally has a darker spot within the yellow area, and the base color of the segments may be white to light purple or solid yellow, each up to 1 inch long, and three rounded petals with 3 narrower sepals beneath. The petals are hairy on their inner surfaces, and may be fringed with long hairs as well. Requires a deep very well-drained fertile sandy soil in a sunny position and must be kept dry over winter. Calochortus superbus is a North American species of flowering plant in the lily family known by the common name mariposa lily . It is native to the west coast of the United States. Seed – sow as soon as ripe or early spring in a cold frame in a very sharply draining medium. Stratification may be helpful. Germination usually takes place within 1 – 6 months at 60 f. Blossoms April through July in zones 6-9.
