Midnight flare azalea is a compact, evergreen azalea, one of many hybrid azaleas introduced by James Harris of Lawrenceville, Georgia, in the 1970s and 1980s. It bears deep tomato-red flowers with ruffled petals in late spring. The relatively large, puckered leaves assume reddish tints in fall. Like most azaleas, ‘Midnight Flare’ prefers partial shade and thrives in well drained, humus-rich, acid soil. It works well in many garden settings including woodland plantings, mixed borders, and containers.Hardy in zones 7-9.
