Seeds from Iris variegate Hungarian Iris. This standard dwarf bearded iris does not have variegated leaves but the flowers are two color. Iris variegata and the many hybrids and cultivars grow as an ornamental. It has these striking flowers with bright yellow petals and cream and purple falls with veins. It has been grown in western Europe since the late 16th century, it is a parent of many of the most colorful modern bearded iris cultivars. All parts of both wild and cultivated irises are poisonous, especially the rhizomes. USDA Hardiness Zones 3 to 8. Seed germination First, you can scarify the seeds to try to speed up germination. For faster germination, soak the seeds in slightly hot water for 24-48 hours, followed by 3 months cold stratification before sowing, 1/4 inch deep, in your soil. Keep damp soil, not soaking wet. Keep pot in warm situation 20°C/68°F. Germination usually takes several months. It can be more, depending on their degree of unbroken dormancy, don't give up.
